29 JANUARY 2012: Had a hard time deciding whether to go out to listen or not. Conditions didn’t seem very good. Only 4015 LHH had any audio and that was barely coming through. But there was a strong OC on 6205 which I thought might be someone coming on. And since I haven’t gone out to listen in a few weeks, I figured I'd go. Conditions weren't too bad around 0715-0725, but it took a nose-dive after that and was very poor. I guess all signals going through or near the Auroral zone were being absorbed this morning because of of the solar radiation storms.
RX: Microtelecom Perseus SDR with ARR preamp.
ANT: 315' Beverage (BOG) at 50°
QTH: Pennsylvania State Game Lands #26
Duration: 0700-0945 UTC
Solar Indices: Solar Flux = 115 A Index = 5 K Index = 2 Solar radiation storms at S2 level. X-Ray Flux at B5. Large area of 6 mhz MUF encompassing all of Iceland and
across half of the UK.
WX: Clear and very windy. Low 20's.
4015 LHH 0705 familiar sounding song but couldn't recognize it. Then M anncr but unable to copy as the signal was too weak. Clear and didn't seem too fady though. (29 Jan.)
5820.02 Orion R. Signal came up at 0757:20, then usual Polka at 0758:37. Percy Faith. Machine gun UTE just blasting away. 0803 canned ID. 0808 live ID anmnt by John totally destroyed. Greetings to Saxonia. Ad for Achims Free Radio Disaster. 0857 live voice-over anmnts but mostly unreadable at the signal was fairly weak. Barely any audio by 0920 and even down in the noise floor at time. Really poor conditions. (29 Jan.)
5835 R. Thunderbird Signal came on here at 0908:42, apparently Thunderbird. No chance at all as it was much too weak. Down in the noise floor most of the time. Getting that awful machine gun UTE here as well. (29 Jan.)
6045 R. Iceman via Wertachtal, Germany *0900 w/mx already in progress. 0905 ID anmnts "...R. Iceman on 6045 khz...I'm your host, my name is Caesar and ....studio in the Netherlands..." and e-mail as icemanshortwave@gmail.com 0934 "Waterloo" by Abba. Horrible slop-over QRM here easing up by 0930. (29 Jan.)
6150 No sign of R. 6150 at the start. Noted the same W anncr hrd mixing w/R. 6150 last week. Is a rel. stn in PT. (29 Jan.)
6200 R. Orang Utan 0718 unrecog. song. Not that bad of a signal. Quite readable. 0718 song "I Can't Stand the Rain". 0721:30 nice song anmnt, ID, and phone number. The Benny Hill Boots Randolph song, then pleasant Dutch song. Fading badly at 0731. 0755 "Moonlight Shadow". 0802:50 anmnt but difficult to copy. (29 Jan.)
6205 The OC heard here when I got up was still there. Very strong. Never did hear any audio. (29 Jan.)
6219.97 R. Merlin Int. Here w/anmnt at 0820.20. A little stronger then Orang Utan. 0824:50 canned echo ID. Canned tlk 08236, jingle, then unrec. oldie. 0828 sci-fi snippet and diabolical echo tlk. 0834 "Dr. Who" theme and 0835 live voice-over anmnt. "Chantilly Lace", "At the Hop" 0838-0843. 0846 live anmnt w/ments of Merlin. Some SSB traffic QRM at 0900. Almost no audio by 0915. Picked back up a little at 0932 and anncr almost readable. (29 Jan.)
6302.25 R. Altrex A signal here at 0852. So weak it was losing sync though. No chance for audio. (29 Jan.)
6325.11 Wizard R. Signal on at 0924:40. Definitely some mx at 0929 and 0935. Seemed to rythmical peak up out of the noise then back down almost every second. Strange propagation. (29 Jan.)
6422.1 R. Grutte Pier On the air at 0836:43. Mx at 0841 and what sounded like M anncr at 0841:16. Looked like it went off around 0906:20. Horrible QRM from the wideband UTE on 6427. Every 5 minutes the UTE would ease up for about 20 seconds leaving this semi-clear. (29 Jan.)
6485 Preimer R. Int. On the air at 0856:13, and mx start at 0900. Then ID "Hello and good morning, this is indeed Preimer R. Int. 6485 kHz shortwave...". Mx and more anmnts at 0909. 0914 "Follow You, Follow Me" by Genesis. Sounded like an ID and then jingle at 0917. Some fair peaks in the next couple minutes. 0920 song anmnt. 0926 anmnt w/ment of "...Republic of Ireland on 685 and round the world on the world wide web. Greetings from...". Faded a bit after that.
6930 IMR Mx at 0901. 0903:45 live M anmnt ment of "listening". 0904:45 electronic voice jingle ID. 0911 morning greeting. (29 Jan.)
6970 LHH Actually getting some mx at 0850. Surprised to get an ID at 0920:50 in live anmnt after song. Another ID and phone given. Apparently mentioning merchandise then w/ment of "5 pounds". 0928:45 "get well" message to someone ending w/nice ID during peak. 0829:454 jingle ID. (29 Jan.)
6984.95 RWI Sounded like mx at 0751. Dropped way down around 0805 but then hrd M anncr at 0810 and mx at 0811 briefly. Strongest peak at 0816 w/mx plainly audible. Not much hope to copy anything substantial though. Down to 6984.82 by 0830 where it stabilized. (29 Jan.)
e-QSL came in from R. Dr. Tim for the Christmas program via Shortwave Combination Christmas. "Rear" view of 2 girls e-QSL!! (2 Feb.)
Got a nice QSL, short letter, photos, postcard, and small map from R. Sextant in the mail today. He did confirm the mx on the MP3 I sent him was his. (3 Feb.)
That's all for this week.
