London Calling.

Post by Andy Richards »

I thought conditions were bad last week. But they were even worse this weekend!

Really terrible noise here.Besides Gloria only Geronimo were strong enough to listen to and enjoy,at least for a while.
Golfbreker? rose above the noise for a while but the rest were all drowning in it.

I hope things improve soon, meanwhile it's off to MW for me...............

Thanks Andy for the Geronimo log. There was a later transmission on 5825 which came in better here, although still struggling against the variable conditions and high band noise.

Brigitte, Altrex and Sonic all put in a fairly decent signal here, but apart from that a pretty terrible day on SW.

Geronimo back in a week or 3! e-qsl's (new design) available from geronimoshortwave@hotmail.com

Noise was unbelievable here too! All over the bands.
It sounded man made. I unplugged everything in the house to no avail. Nearest house is 500 meters away (nobody wants to live any closer to me  ) so I don't think it's the neighbours.
Even the stronger signals, 6210 and 6300 weren't able to overcome the noise even with reasonable signals.[/i][/u]

I wondered if it was just local at first too and tried different aerials and radios.I even walked down the garden with a portable! But the noise was everywhere.

No escape on MW either.....................that was noisy too!!

SW Noise.

I heard tell it was caused by the volcanic dust now circling the planet at high altitude. It it statically charged.

The thought had crossed my mind...............the timing is perfect.

But there is also the complete lack of sunspot activity to think about.

A quick "Google" will show you that volcanic dust has indeed effected
radio propagation before.

Any opinions?
