London Calling.

Post by Andy Richards »

I had quite a bit of noise on the bands this weekend and many signals were fading right out too.
Mystery Radio on 3900Khz with Chris,Andy & Steve was a really good show with a good signal, good music and you could tell the guys were having fun!Shame they decided to move to 6220 at 2200 UTC as they were almost inaudible with me.
FRS Holland had some interesting shows on 3945,6220 & 6400Khz.
The shows on 3945 & 6400 were running about 4 minutes ahead of the 6220 signal. At times 6400 was stronger than 6220 and 3945 was pretty poor with me.But overall the signal on 6220 was the best here.
Playback were quite a bit stronger on Sunday than on Saturday. Good signal as usual from Orion Radio with a live show from Radio Tina.
I briefly had a good signal on 5830,can anyone confirm if this was Free Radio Victoria?
I thought Dr.Tim was anouncing the 6200 transmission
as FRS Germany.Does anyone know what name was actually being used?
Radio Borderhunter came on with a huge signal which suddenly faded out completely. The signal came back only to go off very abruptly again. This was not a fade out, it sounded more like an aerial becoming disconnected or a TX failure.
Anyone any info on Dance Radio? They had a very good signal with me.
Radio Quintus was also much stronger than he is normally with me but he too faded out.
Radio Pioneer has found a nice spot on 6425,better frequency then the more popular 6400 I think.I am curious as to the language of the song I heard him play.It sounded vaguely "Baltic" or perhaps Hungarian to me.
Strongest signal with me over the weekend was from Radio Borderhunter, briefly, then Radio Boomerang and Radio Shadowman. After that the best signals came from Mystery,Orion/Tina,Dance,Quintus & Pioneer.

Hi Andy,

Your station on 5830 was Free Radio Victoria. He was playing a lot of rock n roll and 60s music. Eventually did ID.

The dance station on 6285 was being relayed by a Dutch station (Radio Scotland, I think). The website I saw mentioned in Iann's chatroom was www.danceradio.cz.

I missed the Mystery show on 3900 as I was out and when I got in 6220 was fading away.

What was frustrating was the lack of any short skip conditions on 48m. On Sunday morning there were 3 UK stations on air - Telstar, Merlin and WNKR - and I couldn't hear any of them, although Dutch and German stations were coming in fine. I think other DXers too were having problems hearing stations broadcasting from their own countries (which meant a few Dutch stations coming on the same frequency).

Finally, the best frequency for FRS Holland for me was 6400 which was booming in late morning/early afternoon.

Hi Andy,
Danceradio992 is a quite famous FM station based in Amsterdam.
For several years on air, but mostley only at hollidays.
They use several relay TX in middle and south of NL.

Very high technical standards there, using TX on a unmanned location, linked to the studio with..i don't know..Wii? GHZ connection?
That's a secret, also for AT (telecom).
Over all the years, they did never find the studiolocation.
Nice equipment there!

For 2 years, they had a TX and antenna in a highvoltage mast, 140 m..this mast was located in a lake.
Taking 220V for the TX of the red lights in top of the mast. (is located near airport Schiphol)
There was a TV crew of RTL with them while installing the TX. Must be somewhere on You Tube. Others pictures on their site.
Installing one of their transmitters:

Thanks UKDXer,Radio Scotland and Radio Ramona for your responses.

Fascinating stuff!

UKDXer - interesting that FRS Holland were better with you on 6400.
It just shows that SW reception can vary hugely just a few miles away and that operators should,if they can,use as many frequencies as possible.

Albert - Interesting stuff on Dance Radio.Nice to get a chance to hear them on SW!

Ramona - Strange that the links that you,UKDXer and Scotland gave all pointed to different sites. But all in CZ.
What is the Czech link?
