European Free Radio Report from Dunlo, PA, USA, 11 Feb. 2007

Post by Dave Valko »

Again, the cold temperatures and wind made it a little too dangerous to trek up to the PA State Game Lands remote site to listen this morning (last night). Plus, laying out a Beverage in the dark woods through 1-2 feet of snow and -15 C. temperatures at 2:00 AM didn't sound very appealing, so I decided to listen here at the house. As usual, the numerous local noise sources were a hindrance. The Windom was better then the T2FD on all occasions so I used it exclusively.

6401.06 WMR Getting a carrier here at 0708, not quite strong enough to overcome the local noise. Getting audio at 0807 on the HQ-129X. Recognized Jack Russel in annmnt during nice peak at 0808. Long tlk again at 0827 check. (11 Feb.)

6264.88 Someone here at the start 0700+ but too weak and imposs. 6262 USB traffic QRM. Clear after 0717 but still nothing. Poss. M anncr at 0727 and mx at 0732. Getting some mx at 0754 on the HQ-129X. Still there w/strains of mx at 0855. Have always had Premier on 6264.95, so I wonder if this was someone else. (11 Feb.)

5725.1v Orion R. Carrier at 0734. Horrible local buzzing noise, which was avoided by listening in USB. But then more traffic from 5725. Finally getting a pleasnat Dutch song at 0736, then a Polka at 0742. Start up of Percy Faith at 0801:55. 0804 canned ID, and immediately into unrec. song. Jingle at 0817 check and up to 5725.17. "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac, then anmnt by John at 0823. A Dutch song followed, and John back w/another anmnt. Up to 5725.2 by 0831. "Dancing Queen" by Abba. Fading by 0850 but could still hear anmnt. Still there at 0904, but off at 0905 I believe. Really fady signal. (11 Feb.)

6210.7v Someone here. Mx at 0745. W vclist at 0750. Drifted up from 6210.65 to 6210.71 by 0816. Some QRM from 6214 Argentina. No doubt R. Bonofox as others reported hearing it here. (11 Feb.)

6292.4v Antonio R. Heard carrier here at 0835 but couldn't get any audio. Intermittent pulsing UTE QRM here as usual. Drifted down from 6292.47 to 6292.40 by 0845. (11 Feb.)

6300.02 Very weak carrier at 0845 when R. Nacional Saharaui was found off. May even be a spur. I see others reported hearing R. Scirocco. (11 Feb.)

I listened from 0730-0905. I thought conditions would really be pretty good after how well Mystery Radio was coming in hours earlier. Not so great here, though.

I had Orion Radio on 5725.01 drifting up to 5725.06 early on. A little bit of audio here, but really tough to pull anything out.

Also, I had a carrier on 6401 for WMR, but no detectable audio.

A few other carriers were around, but nothing was a pirate for sure....probably mostly utilities or spurs.

The most notable event of the evening was that the tuning knob on my R-5000 completely seized up and stripped out while tuning in Orion! For the rest of the morning, I was tuning in exact frequencies on the Sony 2010 and punching them in the keypad of the R-5000.
