Report from Dunlo, PA, USA for 14 November 2010

Post by Dave Valko »

14 November 2010: Conditions were very poor to poor and no better than the evening before here. All I could get when I woke up at 0600 was a very weak carrier from 4026 LHH. Nothing else anywhere. There was a small 5 mhz MUF over Iceland. The 6 mhz region stretched from the UK to Greenland. The only data to indicate such poor conditions was a higher K Index. The A Index had dropped down from 16 to 5 but shouldn’t have made it that bad. Conditions seemed best before 0740. Gave up at 0905 when it was obvious it wasn't going to get any better. Besides the poor conditions, there didn't seem to be that many stations on anyway.

RX: Microtelecom Perseus SDR with ARR preamp.
ANT: 315' Beverage (BOG) at 55°.
QTH: Pennsylvania State Game Lands #26
Duration: 0705-0905 UTC
Solar Indices: Solar Flux = 85 A Index =5 K Index = 3 No storms
WX: Mainly clear. Mid-40s F. (around 7° C.)

4026 LHH 0710 just uncopiable anmnts by M. Much too weak. A little better than at home, but probably just because it is quieter. (14 Nov.)

5820.05 Orion R. Signal on at 0758:32. Pleasant instrumental at 0800 for about 30 seconds, then Percy Faith, and what sounded like the "Off Shore Echos" ad at 0804. After some apparent local noise, audio seemed really weak at 0807, but was fine when next instrumental song was started at 0809. Audio problems?? John w/short live anmnt at 0811 and again at 0814. "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd at 0819. A little readable at 0823 and caught ID "Orion R. from the Netherlands". "Down in the Boondocks" at 0828. Oddly enough, came up respectably around 0842, but it didn't last long. Weak in the poor conditions this morning. (14 Nov.)

6200.03 R. Starlight Broadcaster in SP here, IDing like R. Rivadavia to 0730. During the broadcasters open carrier, thought I could hear a voice anmnt. Then just 20 seconds after the broadcaster went off, definitely recognized the voice of R. Starlight. 0732 sounded like "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harem, and another anmnt at 0734. Then dropped down to almost nothing after 0739. Back up though by 0754 w/more mx on peaks for the next 5 minutes, then down again. Looked like it was still there past 0900. (14 Nov.)

6287 R. Shadow Undoubtedly the one here coming on at 0727:55. Just a weak carrier/spike. Did get a little mx at 0736 and 0738 on very brief peaks. Then dropped down, and came back up again w/audio very breifly at 0802 before dropping way down. Never came back up. (14 Nov.)

6308.43 UNID. Carrier coming up here at 0728:30. Definitely strong enough for audio, especially at 0731 and 0733, but didn't detect any. Faded after about 0739. Drifted from almost 6308 at the start to 6308.49, and then coming back down to 6308.29. Went off at 0753:42 w/out ever getting any audio. Was someone possibly testing here?? (14 Nov.)

6310.67 R. Bonofox Signal on at 0808:33. Definitely mx at 0809. Sounded like pleasant DT Pops over the next couple minutes. Still getting bits of audio on peaks to about 0824. Could still see the signal peaking up out of the noise floor every so often at 0900. Some kind of clicking noise on the freq. SSB traffic QRM at 0825. (14 Nov.)

6553.34 R. Rainbow Came on at 0743:10. Signal plainly visible for the next few minutes. Just a little spike rising up out of the noise floor thereafter. No chance for audio. (14 Nov.)

6912.05 Cactus Jack R. Per Ricks blog, signal found here at 0723, and definite mx at 0728. Surprisingly decent at 0741 when next song started. Audiable prior to 0743 and again from 0755-0802, but that was about it. Couldn't recognize any songs. Was still there at 0900. Had to notch out a het from 6911.82. (14 Nov.)

6945.04 Mike R. Signal came on 0756:11, and instru. mx began at 0758:52. 0804 anmnts. 0806 nice ID and sounded like tlk about reception, then instru. mx, then "I Want It All" by Queen. 0809 anmnts but mixing w/SSB traffic. Morning greetings, rpt requests, e-mail addr, and IDs. Canned ID at 0812, and "We Will Rock You" by Queen. "Sweet Home Alabama" by Skynyrd at 0814. 0817 morning greeting to listener. 0819 "You're #1 Pirate radio station, Mike R." jingle. Into White Snake. More voice-over anmnts at 0825 over U2 song and nice ID and e-mail at 0826. Acknowledged rpt from Italy, Finland, and Berlin. 0830 "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor, then "Rosanna" by Toto. 0841 "Sowing the Seeds of Love" by Tears for Fears. 0843-0849 anmnts mentioning other stns/freqs, ID, and special greetings, and acknowledged rpts including one from "Joe L.". DT anmnts 0848. Lady ancr too at 0849 briefly, jingle, then back to mx w/Dance song. More jingles between songs at 0853 and 0858. Het below notched out. Occas. SSB traffic making copy impossible. (14 Nov.)

7479.8 RWI?? Getting a little spike at 0719. Nowhere near strong enough. RWI was reported here by Irish Paul at 0840 and ukDXer at 1025. (14 Nov.)
