Logs 23 Oct. - 13 Nov., from Dunlo, PA, USA (LARGE REPORT!!)

Post by Dave Valko »

First of all, I have to apologize for this report being so LARGE!! As I haven't been able to get caught up until now (well, caught up for the most part anyway!!), I wasn't able to send out any regular reports. The following loggings are in date order except those on micro-DXpeditions to the SGLs remote site which are in freq order. Hopefully I'll be able to start reporting on a more consistent basis in the future!!

(Sorry for any typo's!!)

23 OCTOBER 2011: LHH 4015 was quite poor and 6970 was totally absent when I awoke and checked at 0600. But 6200 Orang Utan was mainly fair for home reception. The QSB and noise didn't seem as bad as last week. So I decided to go up to the SGLs. I was really disappointed with the lack of activity. Only 6 stations heard in 2 and a half hours. Had trouble finding the reflective tacks at first. I almost went back to the Jeep for the compass but then found the marked trees. It was down to freezing but I was comfortable.

RX: Microtelecom Perseus SDR with ARR preamp.
ANT: 315' Beverage (BOG) at 50°.
QTH: Pennsylvania State Game Lands #26
Duration: 0645-0915 UTC
Solar Indices: Solar Flux = 164, A Index = 2, K Index = 0 X-Ray flux = B9 R1 radio blackouts. 9 Mhz MUF south of Iceland
WX: Didn’t document it but the temp was down around 30° F.

4015 LHH 0647 long Techo Dance song, then M anncr at 0653 but too much noise to copy. Steady strength but really noisy. (23 Oct.)

5800.47 FRSH 0758 instru. mx. 0759 usual "Close Encounters" theme and ID routine. 0800 live IDs w/freq, sked, and pgm lineup. Rock/Pop mx w/song anmnts. 0813 rpt acknowledgements, then into "Ventura Highway". Good signal. (23 Oct.)

5815.03 Orion R. Looked like it just came on thre air at 0658:27. Polka start at 0659:23, then Percy Faith at 0701, and right into mx. Sounded like canned SP ID at 0707, and then free radio ads. Live ID, etc. by John at 0709. Pretty nice signal at this time. "...Orion R. is broadcasting from the Netherlands...". 0735 canned ID, "Off-Shore Echoes" ad, and live anmnts. 0747 "Crazy on You" by Heart. 0749 live voice-over anmnts. 0805:20 live anmnt over 'Om-pah' instru. Still pretty nice signal at 0813. 0826 Reggae song. Much better than at home last weekend. (23 Oct.)

6200 R. Orang Utan Really lively Polka at 0700. 0702 "Hang On Sloopy". 0705 "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer. 0710 live voice-over anmnts including phone 0031-623792500. 0719 "The Air That I Breathe". 0727 "Roxanne". 0729:25 live anmnts including ID. 0738:25 nice clear ID "R. Orang Utan from the northeast part of the Netherlands", then into "I'm a Believer". Some SSB traffic at 0743. Went off at 0816:50 at song end w/out warning. (Oct. 23)

6255 UNID. Getting a definite signal here at 0703, and definitely mx a min. later 0704:15. 0706:50 M anncr. More mx hrd on peak at 0708:30. Dropped down. Looks like it went off at 0750:00. Heavy UTE QRM. Don't know if this was an actual Pirate or what. (23 Oct.)

6298.78 Magic AM Signal showed up here at 0856:57. Definite Rock mx at 0859:35. 0906:10 strongest during peak. UTE QRM from 6296 and also from the machine gun UTE. Just a little too weak and too late. (23 Oct.)

6304.8 UNID. Ext. weak signal here coming on at 0851:06. Found when zoomed in on 6298.78. Too weak for any chance for audio. Someone here?? (23 Oct.)

6934.97 Mike R. Came on at 0814:02 and up with Allman Brothers a minute later. 0818 canned ID jingles, then into "Drivers Seat". 0821 rpt acknowledgements over song. 0823 "More Than a Feeling" by Boston. 0833 "Radar Love". 0838 Polka and some voice-over anmnts. e-mail. 7600 FRSH Huge signal here. 0832 Rock mx. 0835 song anmnts, jingle CD ad, ID, Swedish listener acknowledgement, and song anmnt, then said song. 0844 John Mellancamp "ROCK in the USA". Ment of "FRSH Magazine". Came home and set up the NRD-535D to record at 0946, and finally lost audio in morning fade at around 1025. (23 Oct.)

At home:

15065.23 Cupid R. 1504 anmnt w/e-mail addr phonetically and ment of "closing down after this song". (23 Oct.)

15795 R. Borderhunter 1534 Rock-a-Billy song. Jingle, then live ID anmnts. Into "Breaking the Law". 1539 more anmnts. Techno instru. 1544 "I Was Made For Loving You". 1548 said the Sun was shining and the ground was a little bit frozen. Gave mailing addr. 1601 "Jump" by Van Halen. 1610 mentioned doing a low power test. Went into SSTV xmsn at 1622. Low power test at 1626:15 down to 30 watts. 1634:25 power anmnt and into Abba. 1641 closing anmnts. 1642:05 off. Came back on in USB 30 seconds later with 30 watts then boosted it to 100 watts. 1644 continually lowered power down to 1 watt in less than a minute and was still hearing him about 80% copy. Came back up to 100 watts again at 1645:25. 1646:10 AM mode but modulation was muffled and distored. Went down to 1 watt then in AM but most readable in USB. Had trouble in AM mode modulation. Didn't know what the problem was. Switched back to USB at 1649 and was stronger with more punch. Then went to 10 watts in AM again at 1650, but still having modulation problem. Went down to below 3 watts and was able to copy at 3 watts (listening in USB), but then disappeared. Said Terry also noted the AM modulation was distorted. 1656 switched from USB to AM w/50 watts for a short time before closing at 1657. (23 Oct.)

15055.02 R. Tropiq Found here after seeing in Iann's chat that he was on. Strains of mx right off at 1552. 1554:45 mx during very brief peak. Went off at 1558:20. Didn't hear any anmnts and not quite strong enough to recognize songs, but definitely there and audible. Getting some weird wideband local noise. Hrd at home on Perseus. (23 Oct.)

6304.91 R. Black Power 2303 end of song and canned jingle, then live M anncr w/ment of Holland and ID. Rock mx. 2306 remake of “Morning Has Broken”. “Nobody plays a better variety of music” jingle, then back to mx. Nice to hear BP again. (29 Oct.)

6300 UNID. 2312 signal hrd briefly w/what sounded like a recorded pgm possibly on Pirate radio. As strong as R. Black Power. Someone one the air for a short test?? (29 Oct.)

At 0016 hrd mx again. Returned again at 0037. Found tlk at 0038. Sounded like a ment of “UTC” at 0040. Finally went back to mx at 0042. 0051 peak w/”Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now” by Starship. Song ended at 0054. Long strange Rap song with what sounded like a repetitive scream from 0055-0105 (record 0059) and again 0108-0111, although the middle segment could have still been the same song. 0114 sounded like the song “Jane” by Starship. 01150-0133 screaming Rap song again. 0133:15 clear robotic repeating “R. Underground” IDs followed by heavy ‘distant’ echo ID, and then more repeating robotic IDs to 0134. Must have gone off at that point as I didn’t hear any more audio. Occas. severe UTE QRM. (29-30 Oct.)

6898U Malta R. Rock mx at 0018, then remake of the Moody Blues song “Simple Game” 0019-0022. Another song started and was stopped and had deadair. 0023 unrecognized Oldie and voice-over ID w/greetings at 0024. Greetings to R. True North, R. Sierra Bravo, R. Victoria, etc. Freq was varying at this time. 0025-0027 another old Motown-like song. 0027-0031 “Remember Me” by Diana Ross. 0031-0033 song by The Jacksons. 0034 another Motown song, then went off the air at 0035. Huge signal!! Clear and no QSB. Very surprised this is a Europirate. (30 Oct.)

30 OCTOBER 2011: I was hesitant to go to the effort and drive up to the SGLs with all the snow we got from the storm yesterday. It seems there hasn't been a lot of early morning activity lately anyway. But I figured I might as well give it a go. It looked like there wasn't as much snow at the SGLs as at home. The parking lot wasn't plowed, but it wasn't a problem. There was a lot of snow clinging to the trees, some of which ended up on myself while laying out the BOG. Conditions turned out to be only fair, just like I experienced at home when I awoke. However it was pretty quiet. QSB was moderate. I was glad I went as I heard 3 new stations; R. Nachtpiraat, R. Rising Sun, and Baltic Sea R., and also WRI for the first time in many years. A decent amount of activity this morning.

RX: Microtelecom Perseus SDR with ARR preamp.

Signal dropped off after 0815. 0828 canned ID and e-mail anmnt, then more live anmnts w/greetings to R. Saxonia. Difficult copy after 0830, but suddenly picked up at 0845 w/"This Thing Called Love". 0850 Polka. 0855 canned anmnt then John w/live anmnt including ID, a little laughing. Just a little signal and basically inaudible by 0922. Usual decent strength at beginning with machine gun UTE QRM at times. (30 Oct.)

13 November 2011: Noted audio on LHH 6970 and 4026 before I left. They seemed a little better than usual. Also something on 6919. Conditions overall were a little better than they've been the last few weekends. Signal levels were stronger. Fading wasn't as much of a factor either. There was a noticeable improvement in conditions with stronger signals and peaks between 0820-0835. The morning fade didn't seem as abrupt, indicating the grayline is lowering in latitude. The MUF was 8 mhz just south of Iceland. Fortunately it was fairly warm and comfortable. No snow on the ground, so it was a breeze laying out the BOG. The Police came up at 1006 and asked if I saw anyone in a red car drive through. When I said no, they left without a word. I didn't appreciate the spotlight in my face but I can understand the reason.

RX: Microtelecom Perseus SDR with ARR preamp.
ANT: 315' Beverage (BOG) at 50°.
QTH: Pennsylvania State Game Lands #26
Duration: 0645-1020 UTC
Solar Indices: Solar Flux = 169, A Index = 2, K Index = 0 X-ray Flux = B7 No storms
WX: Partly to mostly cloudy. Warm, upper 40’s F.

At 0807, I heard 7 stations on at the same time.

4026 LHH 0848 "Hold Me" by Fleetwood Mac, then "Dance Hall Days". 0657 M anncr voice-over anmnt very briefly. Didn't seem to be quite as strong as at home. (13 Nov.)

5800.06 UNID. Signal on at 0934:40. Sounded like the audio finally came up with mx at 0941:50. Came back later at 1005 and could only muster a small spike. Looked like it was still there at 1016. Just too late. Tnx Achim blog log. (13 Nov.)

5815.03 Orion R. Signal on at 0751:53, and mx start at 0754:18. Awesome signal at the start. 0758 Polka. 0800 Percy Faith. Canned ID and right into mx. 0808 ad and live voice-over anmnts w/ID, greetings to R. Saxonia and said he'd be on around 0900. Report acknowledgement. Unfortunately it really trailed off after 0800. "Help" by The Beatles, "Lucky Star" by Madonna, 0816 AM Forum ad, and 0823 Off-Shore Echos ad. Picked up after 0820 and live ID and greetings anmnt at 0820:15. Said Saxonia and KBC would be on at 0900. Canned ID again and live anmnts over the om-pah Polka. Fading badly by 0900. Barely getting audio at 0930, but could still hear John w/anmnt at 0936. Another Peak coming up out of the mud at 0840:50. Finally anmnt at 0843:40 w/poss. morning greeting. Starting to lose sync. Still in at 0850 w/bits of mx and a brief peak at 0901. Faded then. Still getting a signal on 6294.82 at 0933 and 6294.77 at 1016. 6295 is a bad freq here. (13 Nov.)

6299.97 R. Pluto Slid down here from 6302.97 at 0756:07. Nice ID over remake of "I Want to Kiss You All Over" at 0757:45 "Anyway this is R. Pluto with 20 watts of power. I'm going to make now ?? QSO station... Good morning everyone. R. Pluto, 6300 in the 48 meterband. The last record and signing out here...". Another nice ID 0800:45 and asking for QSO stations and said would be listening. 0803:25 more anmnts seemingly acknowledging listener, said was going to QSO, IDs, etc. ID and song anmnt 0805:05. 0805 "Theres Something Going On" by Frida. Really faded by the final anmnt at 0809, and went off at 0809:34. (see below) (13 Nov.)

6299.97 R. Pluto QSO w/RSI 0816:06 signal on and mx immediately. 0817.25 to 0821:55 DT voice-over anmnts. Couldn't copy much as the signal was weak. Got reports from last weekend from Japan and New Zealand. Off at 0831:07. (13 Nov.)

6302.97 R. Pluto Move here at 0754:50 and continuing w/unrecognizable mx. Vacated this freq then at 0756:07 for 6299.97. (13 Nov.)

6303.97 R. Pluto Moved here from 6305 at 0754:10 and heard what sounded like an ID jingle in the brief 40 seconds he was on this freq. Moved to 6302.97 at 0754:50. (13 Nov.)

6305 R. Pluto Huge signal coming on here at 0728:53 and Dance mx almost immediately. Deadair then into the Pretenders at 0733. 0734:30 ID anmnt by ruined by Perseus. Anmnts came a little too late. (13 Nov.)

6375.29 UNID. Dutchwing?? Came on the air at 0719:35. Dance mx started 2 minutes later. Big signal at this time. 0724 Polka. Audio level too low. Seemed to lower the power at 0726, came back up strong, then deadair. 0728 lowered again, then back up, went off briefly and came back on. Mx started again at 0733:00 w/instru. mx and an S-9 strength!! Strongest signal on the band at this time. 0734 Dutch C&W-like song. Deadair again at 0745, and went off at 0748 but came back at 0749. Still in at 0847 but weak and hardly any audio, and losing sync by 0850. Went off from 0858-0900. Stronger on return w/mx noted. Pretty steady freq. Still barely visible in the display at 1016. 6985.24 RWI Signal came up from below at 0730:15. Then sounded like mx very weakly. Definite mx at 0751. Had to narrow the bandwidth and notch out one of the offending UTEs from 6986. UTEs disappeared after about 0803 but the signal had faded. Plainly audible at 0827 and 0833 peaks, but audio level still low. Drifting down to 6985.0 by 0900. Signal strength, low audio, and QRM all made it impossible. (13 Nov.)

Hello Dave!

Russian UNID on 6305 at 23.13 (12.11.2011) was Радиостанция "Чёрные земли" /Radio Tchyornyye Zemli (transl. Radio Black Acres or Radio Black Lands). Were Russian pop-songs, North Korean song and several IDs in Russian, probably synthesised by text-to-speech software (female voice). However I think that was NOT Russian station.
