Report from Dunlo, PA, USA, for 20, 21 November 2010

Post by Dave Valko »

20 November 2010: Conditions weren’t that good. Spent more time than anything trying to figure out good paths through the woods for the Beverage.

RX: Microtelecom Perseus SDR with ARR preamp.
ANT: 315' Beverage (BOG) at 55°.
QTH: Pennsylvania State Game Lands #26
Duration: 2025-2215 UTC
Solar Indices: Solar Flux = 84 A Index =1 K Index = 1 No storms
WX: Mostly cloudy. Low 40s F. (around 5° C.)

6305.1 UNID. Getting little peaks at 2135. Never got strong enough for audio. At 2144:14, another signal came on 6305. Went off at 2159:30. (20 Nov.)

6305 UNID. Came on at 2144:14, and getting strains of audio at 2148. Just about strong enough to recognize songs by 2158. Clear after 2200 for a minute or two then some SSB traffic started just below. Was evident it just wasn't going to come in any better, so I called it quits at 2211. (20 Nov.)

6932.32 UNID. A signal here at 2134. Seems like a Europirate. Starting to get some audio at 2147. Improving as evening progressed like a Europirate should. Drifting up to 6932.42 by 2150. Was up to 6932.46 by 2205, then dropped back down to 6932.43 by 2211. Sounded like oldies, but hard to tell. M anncr at 2210. Right at readability threshold. Audio seemed a bit distorted too. Atlantic maybe?? (20 Nov.)

6055 RWI Just missed s/on and already into C&W mx at 2134. 2135 Peter Hills w/EG ID, mention of starting in 1983. Mailing addr repeated several times, jingle, and back to mx. Some sort of buzzing at 2145, and resumption of mx. 2147 mention of anniversary celebration and addr again, and dedication. 2151 jingle w/US DJ saying he and Peter were the best DJs. "Highway to Freedom" ID jingle at 2159. 2202 FR anmnt including ID and addr. FR Pops then. 2107 EG "1983 to 2010" jingle by deep-voiced M. 2210 another FR anmnt mentioning power and addr. So obviously EG from 2130-2200, and FR after 2200. Good and clear of course. (20 Nov.)

21 November 2010: At home, 4026 LHH was just slightly audiable and just a tad better than last week. There was also a signal on 7603 but it was probably nothing (the freq was clear later at the SGLs). No other stns hrd. I chose to go out to listen anyway to see how easy it was to lay out the Beverage in the new direction. Didn’t take long at all. Conditions turned out to be about the same as last Sunday morning. There was a 6 mhz MUF over Iceland. The Auroral zone looked somewhat weak and far to the north. I could have stayed out longer. Was losing laptop battery power by 1000 and it didn’t seem profitable, so left at 1005.

RX: Microtelecom Perseus SDR with ARR preamp.
ANT: 315' Beverage (BOG) at 50°.
QTH: Pennsylvania State Game Lands #26
Duration: 0650-1005 UTC
Solar Indices: Solar Flux = 80 A Index =2 K Index = 1 No storms
WX: Full Moon. Hazy with a bit of fog. Around 30° F. (-1° C.)

4026 LHH 0652 current Pop song, 0654 M anncr w/ment of freq, jingle ID, and couple more anmnts, "Laser" and "More Hits! jingles, and back to mx. Tough noisy copy at this time. 0716 abt the same w/M anncr between songs. Seemed a little worse and more fady by 0732 check. (21 Nov.)

5799.76 Getting a healthy carrier here at 0659+. It may have been modulated. If so it was extremely weak. (21 Nov.)

5819.85 R. Saturnus Signal on at 0944:44. Then strains of audio on peaks. Definite M anncr at 0952. 0956 canned anmnts in deep voice, then slow bluesy song w/W vclist. Sounded vaguely familiar. Easily audible by 0959. Dropped off and was getting that nasty machine-gun UTE often after 1000. Had to shut down at 1004 as the laptop was about out of power. (21 Nov.)

5820.05 Orion R. Signal on 0755:30. Pre-show Dance mx at 0756. Percy Faith of course, 0800-0803 jingle, and into mx. Nice ID/AM Forum ad and Off Shore Echos ad at 0807. 0808 instru. mx and John w/voice-over anmnt giving morning greeting and freq, greeting to Saxonia and said they'd be on later. Weakening and very fady by 0815. 0818-0823 "Magic Man" by Heart. Like Orang Utan, getting some decent peaks for a few min. around 0827. Live anmnts 0830. 0840 "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues. 0853 "Behind Blue Eyes" by The Who. Really nice briefly at 0905, the best all broadcast. Then dropped back down. Difficult by 0925. Went off early at 0942:51. (21 Nov.)

5826 UNID. Definitely had someone here at 0659 playing mx. By the time I got the recording started and returned at 0703, it was gone. (21 Nov.)

6005 FRSH relay 0959 s/on w/mx and voice-over greeting and ID anmnt w/ment of 6005, and apparent sked. 0902 canned ID jingle. Into Pop mx. Usual pgming but difficult readability due to adjacent slop-over QRM mainly from who else but WYFR. Think it stands for Wiping (out) Your Free Radio (station). (21 Nov.)

6170 R. Borderhunter Signal on at 0856:53 and mx 50 sec. later. Morning greeting, ID, and what sounded like a greeting to listener in Switzerland. "Breakin' the Law" by Judas Priest then. 0905 clear song anmnt and ID. 0909 ID, freq, hello's. Gave e-mail addr. 0941 "I Was Made for Loving You" by Kiss. 0946 Dance mx, short song anmnt, and signal gone abrupty. Moved up to 6200. DRM noise and slop-over QRM again. (21 Nov.)

6200 R. Borderhunter 0946:56 found here strongly, moved up from 6170. Clear. "Rock-n-Roll is King" by ELO at 0950. Instru. Techno mx at 0953. 0958:15 ID anmnt ("Hunting across the borders of Europe"), and said "...was not good in the 49 mb, so I run away..." referring to his move from 6170. Getting some nasty QRM slopover from NHK World after 1000. (21 Nov.)

6200.02 R. Orang Utan 0730:32 came on almost immediately after the broadcaster went off here. Mx by 0733, and anmnts at 0734. Getting some pulsing UTE QRM here at times. 0741:15 anmnt "Listeners, you are listening to R. Orang Utan from the Netherlands...". Another anmnt at 0744 including an ID and ment of "Monkey radio". A lot of Dutch Pops. Picking up pretty well for a min. at 0746. 0747:35 anmnt. Really dropped down by 0805. Peaks again at 0826, then SP SSB traffic QRM at 0828. Sounded like a DT anmnt w/definite ID at 0850. Machine-gun UTE was blasting all over it at this time. "Love Machine" by The Miracles at 0906. Went off at 0933:35. (21 Nov.)

6210 LHH Jumping up out of the noise floor after 0813 w/M anncr. 0817 mx weakly. 0819 M anncr briefly on peak, but totally impossible. 0826 "Time Passages" by Gerry Rafferty. After a nice peak at 0831, just very weak but steady to the top of the hour. 0901 some sort of historic tlk, 0902 "Laser" jingle, then back to mx. 0905 very nice peak, then DJ chatter mentioning "about 4 hours of music" and ending w/song anmnt. Bluesy vcl at 0922, then M anncr again. 0948 "Wild Wild West" by The Escape Club. Still audible at 1003. (21 Nov.)

6217 UNID. 0719 definite mx on peak. Extremely weak. 0721 W anncr and sounds like a spur. Oddly enough, in Ricks blog, he report a tentative R. Fox 48 here. But it was about an hour later. (21 Nov.)

6220 R. East Coast Holland?? Strong signal on the air at 0848:52, and Dance mx a min. later. Massive signal at 0852. Mx turned down at 0852:20, then gone at 0852:37. Wish it would have stayed on. (21 Nov.)

6220.11 UNID. Came on the air at 0907:57 and mx started about 2 min. later. Horrible rumbling UTE right on the freq made an easy copy very difficult. Not to mention the SP SSB traffic QRM as well. Sounded like Rock mx at 0928. Went off at 0947:56. Same stn that was here at 0851?? ukDXer had R. East Coast Holland tentatively here around this time. (21 Nov.)

6222 Signal showed up here at 0754. Turned out to be a SP numbers stn, at 0801. Also hrd one on 6237 after 0700 earlier. (21 Nov.)

6261.59 R. Torenvalk On the air at 0852:04. Could detect the carrier to 0910, but no chance at all for audio. (21 Nov.)

6280 R. Merlin Int.?? On the air at 0851:20, and "Hotel California" by The Eagles 40 seconds later. Pulsing UTE QRM just obliterated it 80% of the time. Suddenly gone at 0854:49. (21 Nov.)

6280.05 R. Merlin Int. On at 0924:12. Same stn as hrd half hour earlier?? Although it seemed strong enough, I couldn't confirm audio until 0932 when Dance mx as heard. Up to 6280.09 by 0934. 0940 anmnt w/ment of "listeners" and ending w/song anmnt. Still getting bits of audio whenever the signal would peak very briefly at 0951. 0952 surprising good peak out of nowhere just at the right time to hear "Mickey" by Toni Basil, then song anmnt and ID at 0953, some sort of jingle. Pulsing UTE just totally destroyed it when it was on, and of course would kick the rx out of sync. (21 Nov.)

6283.73 UNID. A signal here coming up out of the floor at 0843. Was off the air from 0902:33 to 0906:36. But went off again at 0907:22 not to return. Although it seemed strong enough, I didn't detect any audio. Same as that was on 6284.23 earlier?? Was reported in Ricks radio blog as Unid. also. (21 Nov.)

6284.23 UNID. Apparent little peaks rising above the noise floor at 0813. A bit stronger by 0821, and finally some music at 0833. Went off at 0840:41. I see Irish Paul reported it in his blog too. Who was this?? (21 Nov.)

6295.05 Trans Europe R. Signal on at 0929:00. Then as soon as the mx start about a minute later, a massive pulsing UTE came on over top. Could only muster weak mx on peaks when the UTEs weren't on which amounted to only about 3 total minutes in the next half hour. The SADR station on 6297 came on sometime around 0953, and a CW stn on 6294 came on at 1000 which made it even worse. So it was basically hopeless. (21 Nov.)

6300 Top R. Signal on at 0855:00 and mx almost immediately. 0858 apparent jingle w/SFX then into Polka followed by another. A little stronger at 0906 then faded down to almost nothing just 2 min. later. M anncr at 0915 w/possible ment of 6300. Went off at 0917:35. Pulsing UTE below on 6297 was really playing havoc. (21 Nov.)

6305.86 R. Altrex On at 0929:35, so obviously came down here from 6324.86. A little mx audible at 0930 then. Audio right at threshold early on, then nothing but a spike on the display till I stopped at 1004. (21 Nov.)

6324.86 R. Altrex On at 0827:39. A bit of mx by 0832. Sounded like Dance mx at 0836. 0839 live anmnt from a familiar voice. Was coming up at 0844 but then faded down. Peaking very quickly w/some Dance mx at 0903-0909 including unreadable anmnts at 0906-0908. Went downhill after that. Off at 0929:11. (21 Nov.)

6325.03 Antonio R. Signal on at 0946:47. The signal was plainly visible on peaks, but there was just no chance. Too weak and too late in the morning unfortunately. (21 Nov.)

6374.46 R. Sonic Came on the air at 0821:30, and mx abt 35 seconds later. Sounded like there was a talking portion in the Rock song at 0827. "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" by Meatloaf at 0832. "Purple Rain" by Prince at 0841-0848. 0856-0902 "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler. Really nice by 0905. 0909 finally anmnt w/morning greeting, ID, and ending w/ment of 6375. Weakened then. 0918 another anmnt w/partial ID. More tlk at 0924 ending w/ID. 0925 "Love is a Battlefield" by Pat Benatar. Off at 0929:10 w/out warning. (21 Nov.)

6390.07 R. Scotland Int. On the air at 0936:17. Didn't start mx ("Paradise City" by Guns n Roses) until 0942:22. 0949 live anmnts w/ment of someone in Finland. Couple more Hard Rock songs, then brief canned e-mail addr at 0957, and back to mx. Still getting mx at 1004 when I had to shut down. Because of the massive UTE just below on 6387, had to move the passband a bit. There was also a locomotive-sounding UTE that would occasionally flare up on top. (21 Nov.)

6540.35 R. Brigitte?? Signal came on at 0900:32. Would peak enough for the sync to lock on occasionally, but really no chance to get any audio. About the last time the signals spike was visible was at 0952. (21 Nov.)

No sign of Zender Rona Lisa at 1000+ per Achim's log in his blog.

Just a few notes in case you may see something strange in my reports; Naturally I'm typing up the preliminary loggings while I'm listening at the remote site. Later, while reviewing the recordings (after I've gotten some sleep!!), I'll ammend and add to the loggings. So sometimes portions that should have been deleted weren't. And sometimes typo errors sneak their way in. Also, besides listing sign on and sign off times to the nearest second, I may denote the time of a particular detail (usually an announcement) to the nearest second as well. This is so that I can easily and quickly return to the recording and make a copy to keep. I usually make personal notes, occasionally in the loggings themselves, but most often in the heading under the date at the beginning (along with the general propagation observations). I try to delete these out as they're really not relevent to anyone else. But if you'd like to read the comments please let me know. You might find some of them of interest. Might even make you laugh!!

I've noticed that some of you report stations by ascending frequency order and some by time. Both ways have their advantages. If you would prefer I report my loggings in a particular order, please let me know.

And by all means, if you see something that should be corrected, do please let me know. Accuracy helps out everyone.

Thanks!!
