logs from Newfoundland, Oct. 14-19 - A great weekend

Post by newfoundland dxer »

Hi everyone:

Another great weekend! Lots of stations heard both Saturday and Sunday.

I got up early on Sunday morning, and was very happy to hear about a dozen stations. Reception was very poor for the majority of stations, but it was still my best Sunday morning so far, and the first time that I could hear stations right up until sunrise.

I had a real shock Sunday afternoon when I turned on the radio at 1640 (2:10pm local), and actually found Radio Marconi on 6324, loud enough to identify a song. I checked and found Mystery and PBI as well. Unfortunately, I had to leave the radio for a couple hours.

Obviously, conditions are changing, and signals on 48 and 52 m are propogating through more and more daylight. As well, 19 and 31 m have seen successful tests.

Could be R.Kahuzi in Bukavu (Congo ex Zaïre), with programmes in French and local languages, and with relays of the french service of the VOA. (I heard a VOA relay in french // 31m)

Thanks or the replies, guys.

Ray, I thought about 6210 being Kahuzi, but Kahuzi is only scheduled to 2000 weekends (earlier on weekdays), while I ofter hear 6210 up to 2200 weekdays and weekends. To me, the music sounds Greek or eastern European. When I was young, Africa was my favourite DX target, so I am sure it was not African music.

Nova, I'm not sure if "serious" is the right word, it's really just a whole lot of fun :). I love the "thrill of the chase", trying to hear every station I can. I am really looking forward to this winter (my first listening to pirates), so I am very curious about how the conditions are changing and improving.

Cheers, Terry
