European Free Radio Report from Dunlo, PA, USA

Post by Dave Valko »

First off in this report are a few stations heard on Saturday evening.

6304.85 Cupido R. 2056 with just a carrier, but noted strains of mx at 2057. Definitely recognized the operator at 2124 w/phonetics. Apparent song anmnt at 2131. More anmnts at 2139. Buzzing UTE started up around 2155 near the freq making copy difficult. At 2157 Rinus gave the phone number "0031..." and cont. w/anmnt mentioning "antenna". More anmnts followed at 2203, 2220. Mentioned yours truly at 2221 (thanks!!), and 6305, and a someone listening in Montreal. The UTE was too much after this but I did get an ID at 2314 w/mentions of going on tomorrow, transmitter, "...on the higher bands...", e-mail address, and phonetics. Another ID was heard at 2326. Played a lot of Dance and Rock mx. If not for the UTE, would have been much much easier. (7 Oct.)

3907.91 Just a carrier here at 2059. Didn't go off so possibly not a Ham. (7 Oct.)

6309.06 May be nothing, but was hearing a signal on this freq at 2226. Local QRM came on later making it impossible. (7 Oct.)

6210 R. Borderhunter Big signal at 2321 w/Euro Dance mx. 2324 into "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straites. Song anmnt and nice ID at 2329 "You're listening to a ?? R. Borderhunter standing by here on 6210 at this time late at night...". Closing anmnts at 2331 including e-mail borderhunterradio@hotmail.com, more mx briefly, then one final closing anmnt and off at exactly 2333:10. Great signal and every bit as strong as Mystery R. above!! (7 Oct.)

6220.02 Mystery R. On at 2155 but wasn't there at 2120. (7 Oct.)

6878.02 Pirate Music Signal here undoubtedly the Italian Pirate Music at 2340. Maybe bits of mx at times but just too weak. (7 Oct.)

Conditions seemed half decent on Saturday evening, and when I noticed that both Mystery R. and TWR Monaco were doing well when I awoke at 0515 UTC, I decided to drive up to the remote site to listen for the first time since Spring. A 6-point Buck (Deer) on the road failing to yield the right of way and the Power Tank rechargeable battery dying after only an hour made the trip interesting. Propagation conditions were just fair and fortunately not stormy like last weekend. It was rather noisy from thunderstorms though. It was nice to hear a few stations even if they were weak. Afterwards, back at home, I noticed the stations heard at the remote site when I left were still nearly equal in signal quality here at the house. Also, the local noise didn't appear to be that bad. So the new antennas (T2FD and Windom) may allow me to listen solely from the house. More comparisons are needed. Here is what was heard.

RX: JRC NRD-535D
ANT: 300 foot Beverage laid out on the ground through the woods at roughly 40 degrees.
QTH: State Game Lands #26
Duration: 0600-0805 UTC
Solar Indices: Solar Flux = 77, A Index = 9, K Index = 1 No Geomagnetic storms
WX: Partly cloudy and Moonlit. 48 degrees F. (9 C.)

6878.02 Pirate Music 0615, could just barely hear mx. A little stronger at 0645. Very weak carrier. Not really any better than at home. (8 Oct.)

6375.31 Just a carrier for a while after 0621. Probably no one. (8 Oct.)

6324.49 Unid. 0623 'happy' peppy mx. Very weak but definitely someone here. 0626 possible M anncr briefly. 0627 M vclist in song. 0630 definite M anncr but impossible to copy. M anncr again at 0635. Still going at 0713. W vclist at 0715 sounded like a Sade song (might have been "The Sweetest Taboo"). 0715 M anncr again w/possible ment of radio. 0725 seemed like a trumpet cutting through. Extremely weak carrier after 0800 but there. Rock steady freq. Who was this?? (8 Oct.)

6220.07 Mystery R. 0633 Dance/Pop mx. "Twilight Zone" theme mx and canned (presumed) ID anmnt at 0652. Pretty strong. (8 Oct.)

6400.1v Carrier at 0640 and maybe a little mx, but too much UTE QRM to be sure. Thought was getting some audio when the UTE would fade briefly at times. Fairly clear at 0706 but signal was too weak. Seemed to be drifting up too from 6400.13 to 6400.2. Someone here?? (8 Oct.)

6308.4 R. Paardenkracht 0730 instru. mx. 0734-0736 another instru. song. 0736-0738 "Popcorn" instru. I believe. 0739-0741 another popular instru. song from the 60's (The Ventures??). 0748 definite M anncr w/possibly phonetics. Too weak. 0749 next song. Really tough by 0754 but still in w/bits of audio after 0800. Extremely weak but there when noted back at home. Distorted carrier (no distinct center tone in SSB). ID per "uk dxer"s blog. (8 Oct.)

6294.96 Premier R. Found here at 0745 w/end of song. Just too weak to copy mx. Still there after 0800. Still getting it at home at 0824 but no audio though. ID per "uk dxer"s blog. (8 Oct.)

All for now. 73 Dave
