Logs from Newfoundland, Oct. 28 - Nov. 1

Post by newfoundland dxer »

Hi everyone:

Like everyone on this side of the pond, I was looking forward to Halloween weekend with great anticipation. After all, it is traditionally THE weekend of the year for the US side.

Unfortunately, I arrived home on Friday night to find extremely loud, but intermittent, local noise (rfi). I would get a second or two of clear reception, then a monstrous roar for 5-10 seconds. I listened for a couple of hours, and even logged some details from Grutte Pier who was using only 30 watts, but the noise eventually drove me away. (Logs for Friday are given as s-levels only, representing the signal strength between noise bursts … it was hard to judge a SINPO)

Saturday was worse. Noise was constant and louder, s9+20, and I tracked the source to the power pole in front of my house. No logs Saturday.

Sunday, the noise was gone! I was one extremely happy listener.

The highlight of the weekend was Halloween Radio, who kept popping up all over the band from various relay stations. I didn’t recognize much of the music on the program, but I enjoyed it. Thanks also to Pumpkin Patch Radio and Capt. Morgan for the Halloween-themed shows.

There were the usual great signals from Black Bandit, Mustang, Oldtimer and Powerliner, but low power station Witte Reus also had a couple very clear peaks.
