European Free Radio Report from Dunlo, PA, USA, 26 Nov.

Post by Dave Valko »

Went out to the remote site to listen several times this long (Thanksgiving) holiday weekend. Here is what was heard.

24 November 2006: Set up a test with R. Borderhunter to do 10 minute broadcasts at the top and bottom of the hour from 1600-1900, and then a longer broadcast to 2000+ as I was curious to see how early 48 mb Europirates could be heard near the earliest sunset of the year. Although I figured it might be possible to hear R. Borderhunter as early as 1800, I was still shocked to hear his signal at 1732!!!! So that alone made the trip a success. It was amazing because the K index was high and there were G1 level storms. Wonder what would be possible during good propagation conditions!! Being warm and sunny was an added bonus. On the way up, the NRD fell off the seat and onto the floor again. Fortunately there was no damage except to the bent adapter ground plug.

RX: JRC NRD-535D
ANT: 315' Beverage (BOG) at 50°, and 395’ at 85°
QTH: Pennsylvania State Game Lands #26
Duration: 1600-2045 UTC
Solar Indices: S.F. = 77 A Index = 15 K Index = 3 (but down to 2 at 1818) Minor space weather w/G1 level storms.
WX: Clear, sunny. Warm 50°56° F. (10°13° C.)

6210 R. Borderhunter 1732 a definite carrier here until at least 1743, but not there at 1745. Extremely weak of course. That’s a full 4 hours and 20 minutes before our local sunset!!!! Incredible!! Noted carrier again at the ToH xmsn at 1801. It may have come on at 1800:30 but it wasn’t abrupt enough to be certain to the second. Went off at exactly 1811:05!! A little stronger when it came on for the 1830 xmsn at exactly 1830:55. Still not strong enough for audio, although it sounded very much like a M anncr briefly at 1835:50. Definitely audio at 1840, but it went off at 1840:50. Was a couple minutes late for the longer 1900 xmsn showing up at exactly 1902:05. An echo anmnt and deep-voiced M anncr, which I found from Frans later that this was the Borderhunter 2007 Summer Meeting jingle. Another jingle 1803-1804. Only strains of audio after that. Came back at 1918 and nothing was heard. (see below) (24 Nov.)

6220 Mystery R. Getting a carrier here at early as 1804. Seemed similar in strength to Borderhunter on 6210 at this time. Maybe a tad stronger at 1808. A little bit of mx at 1833!! Almost 3 and a half hours before sunset!! Long Techno-Dance mx much more audiable by 1852. Usual ID at 1910. Really impressive by 1935. (24 Nov.)

6205 R. Borderhunter Found on this freq at 1942 w/couple nice Rock-a-Billy songs. 1952 clear short ID w/freq over Techno-Dance mx. Instru. song. Also recognized “Daddy Coolâ€
